Kokatat PFDs

(new link coming; REI disabled all direct product links after affiliates integrated them into pages... I'm trying to find alternate vendors for everything.)

Naturally, I don't have to try to convince you of the need for a PFD (Personal Flotation Device); that's a given if you're out there in a wee boatlet. But it is amazing just how broad a range of products one can find out there.

The problem is that when you're paddling, two factors become critical that would not even be noticed on a sailboat.  First, the repetitive arm motion absolutely demands a PFD that is designed for use in this market... not a cast off "life jacket."  Second, the fit has to accommodate not only your body geometry, but the kayak seat back.  It can't ride up, nor force you to lean forward unnaturally, or you will be in pain.

I've been through a few and watched my friends deal with various cheapies over the years, and I have come to the conclusion that this is one area where we can't afford to skimp.  (Besides, if it's unpleasant to use you'll bungee it to your deck instead of wearing it, and then when the unexpected happens, well... I've been a bad boy as much as anyone, but I've become a believer.)  There are 3 or 4 good names in the PFD biz these days, and I can't give you a comparative analysis, but I do have a fondness for Kokatat:  I've been using their gear for ten years.  The OutFIT and MsFIT PFDs are superb (the latter is designed specifically for women) and we gladly trust them with our lives.
