Stereo Amplifier

There's not too much to say about this yet -- this is the amp that drives the pair of speakers embedded in the arch above my head, and as with most of the units that are on most or all of the time, one of the major design issues is standby power dissipation. All initial testing has been done with an excellent little Sony automotive unit, the 20-watt-per-channel XM-2025, though this is now quite a few years old and probably not the best final choice for the Microship. Besides, it's a great little amp for my office MP3 system... <grin>

Note that the audio amp is a black box with basically preset gain (easily tweakable in the Sony with a screwdriver); we still have to come up with a master volume/tone control, presumably in a unity-gain preamp. Headphone outputs are needed as well.

Back to Microshipnet drawing...

We have recently discovered a Texas Instruments product evaluation module that looks interesting: the 10-watt TPA032D02 class D (digital) audio power amp. There's a fascinating PDF data sheet available here -- the standby current is only 2.5 mA when the audio is muted!
