BEHEMOTH Presentation at Grass Valley Group

I often described BEHEMOTH as a high-tech door-opener, a magical key that would let me into places that I would have never seen otherwise. This was one such case, offering a glimpse into the world of high-end video production. I showed up with the mobile-lab trailer, offloaded the bike, did a talk, and moved on… part of a whirlwind speaking tour.

High-Tech Bicycle – Steve Roberts, creator of a high tech bicycle he calls B.E.H.E.M.O.T.H. (Big Electronic Human Energized Machine… Only Too Heavy) will be at the Building 9 classroom, from 3 to 5 p.m., on Friday, January 24. Steve has traveled about 17,000 miles around the country on this recumbent bicycle (and its two predecessors, the Winnebiko I and II). The gadgetry on this human-powered vehicle is a veritable Disneyland of technology, with everything from photovoltaic power and regenerative braking for powering the various systems to fully functional Mac Portable, SPARCstation, PC, custom FORTH processors, audio and serial crosspoint matrices, multi-band ham radio with satellite up- and down-link, Global Positioning Satellite receiver, CDROM with geographical mapping capability, cellular radio, speech and music synthesizers, ultrasonic alarm system, heads-up display, and much more. If you’d like to see a great example of interdisciplinary innovation and phenomenal packaging, you’ll want to see this bike! – Bruce Rawles
